Running and Returning

This essay is about the grace of spontaneous spiritual experience that calls us to a direct and personal connection with the divine. My own call came quite literally through the telephone! It started a lifelong search that has inspired me to delve deeply into the mystical roots of my Jewish Heritage.

I was dreaming of doves cooing outside my window in New York City, and I awoke to the phone ringing at 3 a.m. I fumbled for the receiver and said “hello” repeatedly. There was no voice on the other end. I hung up. And then I heard it. A voice spoke loudly and clearly: “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh.”

Sacred Letters of the Hebrew Alphabet

A Hassidic story about the power of the Hebrew letters starts with a devout but unlearned peasant journeying through the forest on the eve of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. After losing his way, by sunset he realizes he will not make it to synagogue on time.

Not having a prayer book and not knowing the prayers by heart, the distraught farmer cries out to God, “Master of the Universe, what can I do? How can I pray to you? I will recite the Hebrew alphabet and You, You put the letters together to make the right words.” He repeats the letters of the alphabet again and again, until he feels peaceful within. It is said that this unschooled man’s prayers were more potent than those of the far more knowledgeable sages.
